General questions

If I remember correctly, there was a movie with Jay Underwood who portrayed a man stalking a woman. The movie has him saving the life of a little boy, and the woman thanks him by offering him a free breakfast. He eventually starts to stalk her and even takes pictures of her walls so he can put them on his walls. He also believes that the woman is in love with him.

Answer: It's the 1994 film "Stalked." Maryam d'Abo plays the woman he becomes obsessed with.

The Great Gatsby (2013)

Question: What sort of accent is Gatsby supposed to have? (00:29:55)

Chosen answer: This has been answered before. Gatsby grew up in a poor, mid-western family. He is a self-made millionaire (through illegal means) but pretends he comes from wealthy, upper-class society. He has adopted a fake posh accent to help support the illusion of his bogus background. It is how he believes well-bred people speak.

Men in Black 3 (2012)

Chosen answer: It's never explained how Zed died. Rip Torn, who played Zed, may have been unexpectedly written out because at around the time of filming he had been arrested for breaking into a bank branch while intoxicated and carrying a firearm (he believed he was entering his own home). Rather than going into a detailed reason for Zed's death or incorporating it into the plot, it was simply stated that he had passed away.

Gone (2006)

Question: The trailer shows clips that are not in the actual film, such as Taylor driving the car towards Alex in the rain, and a different take of Alex telling Sophie that he is disappointed in Ingrid. Where can I find the version of this film that includes these deleted/alternate scenes?

Hobbes

Chosen answer: It's unlikely there is a version of the movie containing those exact scenes. You might be able to find them separately online, but some scenes used in trailers are often not in the movie.

Halloween (1978)

Question: In the end, when Michael has his mask taken off, it looks like his left eye is messed up. Whats the reason for this? I am looking for more of a behind the scenes answer.

Answer: Even though it was thought that Michael Myers had a deformed left eye, it is supposed to be the result of the injury that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) inflicted when she stabbed him in the eye with a clothes hanger. The look was achieved by a prosthetic that was stretched to give the eye a droopy-like appearance. You can see a similar prosthetic in a brightened up version of the Halloween 2018 poster.

Steel Magnolias (1989)

Question: When Shelby is telling her mom about the pregnancy, what does Shelby mean when she says, "I think it would help things a lot"?

Answer: She means that she and Jackson (her husband) are having marital problems. Jackson wants a son, and she's hoping that having one will bring them closer together.

raywest

Answer: She did say he likes to hunt for everything.

Answer: I always felt it meant her husband is cheating on her. And so her having the baby would hopefully help them get back together.

Blue Velvet (1986)

Question: When Jeffrey and Sandy are discussing where Isabella Rossellini lived, it is mentioned that she lived on the 7th floor of the apartment building. When they show the outside of the building it appears to have only 4 floors. Was this symbolic or an oversight?

Answer: There's probably not any symbolic meaning, despite the number seven having multiple magical connotations to it. Most likely, this is just a movie inconsistency.

Question: This occured to me after watching all the movies. Until the end of this movie, everyone thought Sirius Black supported Voldemort. Therefore, if Severus Snape wants Voldemort to believe that he is loyal to him and is only faking his allegiance to Dumbledore, why does he attempt to capture Sirius and turn him over to the Dementors? Wouldn't he have to explain to Voldemort why he attacked a fellow servant?

Answer: This is not explained well in the movie. Snape was motivated purely by hatred toward Sirius that extended back to when they were students at Hogwarts together. Young Sirius bullied Snape relentlessly and nearly got him killed by playing a trick on him. Like others, he also erroneously believed Black had betrayed the Potters. Snape never forgave him and was so blinded by wanting revenge that he would let the Dementors suck out his soul. Snape would not have to explain anything to Voldemort because Sirius, unlike his family, was never a Death Eater nor did he ever serve the Dark Lord. In fact, he joined the Order of the Phoenix and fought against Voldemort. The Dark Lord knew this.

Question: The prophecy says that Voldemort and Harry can't both survive, so why have they both been alive since the last movie and Voldemort doesn't die for another two movies?

Answer: The prophecy means that they are destined to confront one another at some point in time, and both will die (by killing each other). It does not mean they cannot be alive on the earth at the same time. Also, the prophecy was made before Lily Potter sacrificed herself to save baby Harry. Her death created a spell that gave Harry added protection.

Question: Why did Harry and Nagini crash into a child's room at Bathilda Bagshot's house in Godric's Hollow?

lelapc

Chosen answer: The child's bedroom is part of the neighbor's house that is attached to Bathilda's. It was just part of their fight, not something intentional.

Answer: There are many reasons that known actors appear in movies and are uncredited. Cameo appearances often go un-credited. Actors sometimes do a cameo if they are friends with the director or the other stars. It can add an unexpected surprise for the audience. There are also contract and payment issues if an actor receives billing in the credit. Jack Lemmon, who was the narrator for the story, may have preferred not being credited. He was certainly a big enough star that if he wanted to be listed in the credits, he would have received proper billing.

Chosen answer: When Brent and Nova secretly return to Ape City, they are discovered by a gorilla soldier who shoots Brent. He then takes them to Zira and Cornelius' house.

Chosen answer: It's never explained. The ship had gone through a time warp and that may have rendered it inoperable once it arrived at the new time destination.

Question: The Hogwarts letter states that the recipient has been "accepted" into the school, so are there other magical schools for those who aren't chosen for Hogwarts?

Answer: Every wizard child is accepted to Hogwarts. It's merely the school's way of formally wording the letters to new students. For Muggle-born wizard children or ones like Harry who never knew he was a wizard, the wording may be slightly different. There are other schools of magic, but not in England. As seen in HP and the Goblet of Fire, there is also Durmstrang and Beaux Batons, among others. Also, not all English wizard children attend Hogwarts. Some study in another country or at home, though most go Hogwarts. Muggle-born wizard children are not forced to be trained in magic.

Alien (1979)

Question: When Ripley is climbing into the escape shuttle with Jones in the box, in the background is loads of fire being blasted. It's certainly not coming from Ripley's flamethrower. What's going on here?

Chosen answer: Ripley has initiated the destruct sequence and systems are failing and malfunctioning as the ship prepares to explode. The flames are mostly for visual effect, however, allowing the audience to see what is happening and to heighten the sense of drama and suspense.

Who's the Boss? (1984)

Roomies - S7-E8

Question: In this episode, Samantha moves out of her too noisy dorm room and into a professor's empty house along with an engaged couple, Beth and Benjamin. Benjamin is played by Matthew Perry, who played Chandler Bing on Friends. My question is whether this is the role used to create the Chandler character, because they are so similar.

stormy602

Chosen answer: Most likely this is a type of character he excels at playing and when Friends was being cast he fit the part.

Charade (1963)

Question: In the scene where Tex is terrorizing Reggie by lighting matches very close to her face, why didn't she just blow them out? This scene has always been a pet peeve of mine in an otherwise fabulous movie.

Answer: Blowing out the matches would only incite Tex to act even more aggressively and threateningly. Reggie knows he is not intending to hurt her and only wants to frighten her so she will cooperate in finding the money. Even though she is scared, it's wiser to remain as passive as possible.

Question: Before committing suicide, why did Susannah cut her hair? I've seen this behaviour in other films but have never known the psychology behind it.

Hobbes

Answer: Cutting locks of hair is often done in memory of the deceased. Knowing of her impending death, she cut two locks so as not to have them tainted by blood, but dropped one on the floor. I imagine it was the one for Alfred, but it is just my opinion.

I have goosebumps with this interpretation. I always thought that it was related someone with "scalping." She kills herself. She is her own victim. I don't know.

I agree, I always thought it was a symbolic scalping.

Answer: I think Susannah cut two locks of hair, one for her husband Alfred and the other for her true love Tristan. They were mementos in some respect, but also a clue for her suicide - being married to one brother while loving the other who no longer wanted to be with her. Susannah was torn apart, in pain over losing Tristan and probably felt she could not be true or faithful to Alfred if/when Tristan came around again. She would also have guilt over violating her marriage vows if she were to be with Tristan again while married to Alfred.

KeyZOid

Chosen answer: To give a definitive answer would be misleading because there's no one specific reason why someone does this type of thing. People considering suicide often start exhibiting odd and/or uncharacteristic behavior such as suddenly cutting one's hair. In Susannah's case, it could be a form of self-mutilation, an attempt to change who she is by altering her appearance, or it is a way of controlling something in her life while other events spiral out-of-control, and so on.

Answer: I always thought it was she wanted people to know. She didn't want the wound to be covered.

Dial M for Murder (1954)

Question: After Margo was convicted, why did Tony move one of their beds into the living room?

Hobbes

Chosen answer: It's mostly so the audience can see more of Tony's underlying character. This is Margo's bed, and Tony wanted it separate from the bedroom that they shared as husband and wife. Tony is "emotionally divorcing" himself from Margo as he is about to start a new life as a single man. Leaving the bed in the bedroom would serve as a reminder of his guilt in framing his innocent wife for a murder she did not commit. The bed is likely parked there until he can get rid of it.

Robocop (1987)

Question: Other than serving the plot, why were so many elements of his former life left in the now-vacant home? All evidence of the former family would have been removed before showing it to prospective buyers.

Movie Nut

Answer: I'm watching it on the computer right now and it says "for sale" not sold, who says everything must be removed prior to selling? I'm not American so it may differ from country to country, but I've been to houses for sale during "inspection dates" and some houses STILL have items not removed probably because they are still living in them or still in the midst of alternate living options, some might need the money of the sale JUST so they can move remember his wife is a widow now and probably can't afford living there no more, where is she gonna get the money to move? Also not all houses I've seen had stuff removed (some did) during my house tours p.s Her husband was gunned down so she can't bare to remove anything yet, but her life is destroyed so she might as well put the house up for sale.

astroASMR

Chosen answer: There is no reason except that it is to serve the plot. Normally everything would have been removed by the time the house was put up for sale, but there needs to be some means for Murphy to connect to his past. This is achieved by showing physical objects from his former life to trigger his memory, creating sympathy for the character. This can be considered suspension of disbelief where the audience just accepts something is out of the ordinary for the sake of the story being told.
