Movie Quote Quiz

Tiffany: I was a slut. There will always be a part of me that is dirty and sloppy, but I like that, just like all the other parts of myself. I can forgive. Can you say the same for yourself, fucker? Can you forgive? Are you capable of that?

Pat Sr.: Let me tell you, I know you don't want to listen to your father, I didn't listen to mine, and I am telling you you gotta pay attention this time. When life reaches out with a woman like this it's a sin if you don't reach back, I'm telling you its a sin if you don't reach back! It'll haunt you the rest of your days like a curse. You're facing a big challenge in your life right now at this very moment, right here. That girl loves you she really really loves you. I don't know if Nicky ever did, but she sure as shit doesn't right now. So don't fuck this up.

Pat: It's electric between us! Okay, yeah, we wanna change each other, but that's normal, couples wanna do that. I want her to stop dressing like she dresses, I want her to stop acting so superior to me, okay? And she wanted me to lose weight and stop my mood swings, which both I've done. I mean, people fight. Couples fight. We would fight, we wouldn't talk for a couple weeks. That's normal. She always wanted the best for me.

Pat: You have poor social skills. You have a problem.
Tiffany: I have a problem? You say more inappropriate things than appropriate things.

Pat: The only way to beat my crazy was by doing something even crazier. Thank you. I love you. I knew it from the moment I saw you. I'm sorry it took me so long to catch up.

Tiffany: You know, for a while, I thought you were the best thing that ever happened to me. But now I'm starting to think you're the worst.
Pat: Of course you do. Come on, let's go dance.

Tiffany: You're not a standup guy today, Pat!

Tiffany: I do this! Time after time after time! I do all this shit for other people! And then I wake up and I'm empty! I have nothing!

Tiffany: I opened up to you, and you judged me.

Tiffany: Can we get through one fucking conversation without you reminding me that my goddamn husband's dead?

Pat: How old are you?
Tiffany: Old enough to have a marriage end and not wind up in a mental hospital.

Pat: You look nice.
Tiffany: Thank you.
Pat: Oh, I'm not flirting with you.
Tiffany: Oh, I didn't think you were.
Pat: I just see that you made an effort, and I'm gonna be better with my wife. I'm working on that. I wanna acknowledge her beauty. I never used to do that. I do now. Just practising. How'd Tommy die?

Officer Keogh: Hey, aren't you Tommy's widow?
Tiffany: Yes, I'm Tommy's crazy whore widow. Minus the whore thing, for the most part.
Officer Keogh: You want to get a drink sometime?
Pat: You shouldn't say that to her. She doesn't do that anymore.
Officer Keogh: What? What did I say?
Pat: She doesn't do that anymore.

Character mistake: At the scene at the dinner table where Pat and Tiffany meet, the prescription drug "Trazadone" is mispronounced with a long A as in "trayzadone." This a fairly common drug used for depression and as a sleep aid. Any nurse or pharmacist could tell you the correct pronunciation. Interestingly, the other lesser known drugs were pronounced correctly.

Question: Is it common to be committed like Pat was to avoid a jail sentence? Is this up to the judge?

Answer: It's not exactly common, but yes, it would be up to the judge, and establishing that a person is a "clear and present danger to themselves or others" can result in involuntary commitment in Pennsylvania, where the film takes place. In this case, it would not be hard to argue that, "the person has inflicted or attempted to inflict serious bodily harm on another and that there is a reasonable probability that such conduct will be repeated" (50 PA. CONS. STAT. ANN. ยง 7301 (b) (1)), as he had just physically assaulted his wife's lover and she'd obtained a restraining order. His mental health problems would have been well-documented, so it would have been easy for a judge to order him to undergo psychiatric evaluation, which could (and, in the film, does) lead to extended involuntary commitment at the discretion of a mental health professional.
