Miracle on 34th Street

Question: How did the Dutch girl's mother tell her that Santa Claus would not understand her. Did the mother speak Dutch?

Answer: One would presume that the orphaned girl's adoptive mother does speak Dutch, or else they wouldn't be able to communicate while the daughter is learning English. Of course, Santa Claus (or Sinterklaas, in Holland) understands all languages of the world. Here is the dialogue between Kris and the young girl, interpreted into English: Santa: "I'm glad you came." Girl: "I knew it, you are Sinterklaas." Santa: "But of course." Girl: "I knew it, I was sure that you would understand" Santa: "Of course, just tell me what you would like to have from Sinterklaas." Girl: "Nothing, I already have a lot, I only want to be with this nice lady." Santa: "Will you sing a song for me?" And then they sing a together a Dutch song about Sinterklaas.

Question: I've always wanted to know what Kris and the little Dutch girl were saying to each other.

Answer: Not sure of the dialog but here is the Christmas Carol they sing, the lyrics are: Sinterklaas kapoentje, gooi wat in mijn schoentje, gooi wat in mijn laarsje, dank u Sinterklaasje. The translation is: Sinterklaas good man, throw something in my shoe, throw something in my boot, thank you Sinterklaas. Actually not a Christmas carol but a song for another holiday earlier in December.

Question: How was it possible in the beginning of the movie for Doris Walker to be able to look out her window and see into Mr. Galey's apartment, where he and Susan were watching the parade? This takes place when Doris returns home midway through the parade and asks Cleo where Susan is. Cleo replies, "Oh, she's watching the parade with that nice Mr. Galey." Doris then goes over to her window, looks out, and sees Mr. Galey and Susan watching the parade.

Answer: I don't understand the question. She looks out of her bay window and sees her daughter with Mr. Galey in his apt. Most buildings in New York are U-shaped, so looking out of your window and seeing another apartment is not uncommon. Besides, buildings were designed with an Art-Deco look back in the 1940s.

Visible crew/equipment: When Kris is being taken to the court house, when he meets Alfred before getting on the elevator, the camera pulls in for a closer angle, and you can see the camera mobile's shadow on a pillar to the left.

Kris Kringle: You know what the imagination is?
Susan Walker: Oh, sure. That's when you see things, but they're not really there.
Kris Kringle: Well, that can be caused by other things, too.
