Red Planet

The space crew dudes can breathe on Mars because of these insects that eat algae and exhale oxygen. Gallagher (Val Kilmer) outsmarts the robot AIMEE, sets it on fire and takes its battery in order to power up the old Russian ship that he uses to leave Mars. Bowman (Carrie Anne Moss) rescues Gallagher as he's entering the Mars orbit and they study the Mars insects that Burchenal (Tom Sizemore) stored in a tube before dying.

Continuity mistake: In every view of the front of Mars 1, you can clearly see the landing pod still attached, even when it's on Mars' surface.

Dr. Quinn Burchenal: Uh oh - we're going to talk about God now, aren't we? 'Cause if we are, I'm going to need another pop.
Chantilas: Not God... Faith.
Dr. Quinn Burchenal: Faith? Oh, I had a girlfriend named Faith. She cheated on me, with a girl named Chastity.

Question: What exactly are those little bug things on Mars and how do they produce oxygen?

Socks1000

Chosen answer: They aren't given a name. They act like plants, except instead of absorbing carbon dioxide and expelling it as oxygen, they eat plants and release oxygen from their bodies. It's probably more effective than using plants since they weren't expecting to be able to breathe on the surface.
