Heat ending / spoiler

Neil (Robert DeNiro) was on his way to freedom with his 'girlfriend' Edey (whom he was really only using for compansionship anyway). However, he gets a call on his cell phone from Nate (Jon Voight), who informs him that they've found the location of Waingro, the former member of his team that ruined the bank robbery (and escaped at the beginning of the movie) and betrayed them by helping Van Zant and killing Trejo. At first, Neil doesn't care about this, but after he hangs up and continues on his route to freedom, he can't get Waingro off his mind, so he decides to make a detour to the hotel and take care of him. However, this gives Vincent (Al Pacino) time to track him down, and they meet face-to-face as Neil is about to drive away. In his panic, Neil makes a run for it (leaving Edey abandoned in the car) and the two men have a shoot out near an airport runway. In Neil's haste, when he emerges to shoot Vincent, Vincent manages to spot his moving shadow and quickly turns to shoot him first. Neil then admits that Vincent was the better man and salutes him with a handshake, before slowly passing away.
